The late 1960’s was another golden era in Greely baseball history. After League Championship losses in 1967 and 1968, the 1969 team put in all together defeating Cape Elizabeth on a masterful performance by pitcher Bobby Doyle.
The 1969 team set a standard of excellence for pitching and defense allowing only 1.72 runs per game. This team record stood until 2007. At the heart and soul of that defense was the hard-throwing Bobby Doyle.
In a complete game win over Gorham, Doyle allowed only 2 hits, striking-out 15. Doyle followed that game with a no-hitter against Freeport, striking-out 17. After throwing this no-hitter, in his very next start, Bobby lost his no-hitter with 2 outs in the ninth. The stretch of 17 2/3 innings of no-hit ball is a record that may never be equaled. Oh-by-the-way, Bobby hit a homerun and 2 doubles in this contest as well. In his next start, he threw 8 innings of 1 hit ball.
In the League Championship games against arch-rival Cape Elizabeth, Bobby overcame his nemesis, throwing a 4 hitter. Finally, in the gutsiest performance ever by a Greely pitcher, the remarkable Bobby Doyle pitched 13 innings, striking-out 20 in a 1-1 tie vs. York for the Sectional Championship called for darkness.
For his career, Bobby earned a school record 22 career victories in 4 years. Although no batting statistics are available for these years, the newspaper articles frequently mention his big hits including many doubles and homeruns.
Bobby Doyle went on to be a longtime pitching coach at St. Joes. An annual award has been established at St. Joes in his honor.
Bobby Doyle was inducted into the Greely Baseball Hall of Fame on June 2nd, 2007.
