In a game of pitchers, Gorhams prevails (5/21/2004) - Greely 0 at Gorham 2

GORHAM — With last season´s Western Maine Conference Class B all-star pitchers opposing each another, it figured that hits and runs would be scarce. They were.

Phil Schools of Gorham and Ryan Copp of Greely each pitched three-hitters. Gorham used one of its hits to score a run in the first inning, then took advantage of Copp´s wildness in the fourth to get an insurance run without the benefit of a hit in a 2-0 victory Friday night.

"This was a great matchup," said Greely Coach Derek Soule. "You had the first-team all-conference pitchers from last season going head to head. I thought both teams played pretty even.

"Gorham caught a few more breaks. They dropped one in right field in the second inning for a hit that scored a run, and they scored on a wild pitch. We really didn´t get any breaks. We lined out a few times.

"We´ve come a long way since our first game April 9. We´re going to be very competitive in the (Western Class B) tournament."

The teams met April 9 in their season opener, with Gorham winning, 7-0.

"Copp didn´t have his best stuff that game," said Gorham Coach Rocky Myers. "Tonight he showed why he´s a good pitcher. He kept us off balance. Greely is well-coached and I´m sure they´ll be tough in the tournament."

Gorham (13-1) was playing its second straight home night game, coming off a stunning 1-0 loss Wednesday night to previously winless Wells.

"We needed this one," said Myers.

"I can´t imagine having a very long losing streak with (Schools) around. He can end them. He´s pitched very well this season. The umpire wanted it low and both teams kept it low."

Ben Thayer´s single to right scored Craig Nicely in the first. Nicely walked and went to second on a fielder´s choice before Thayer knocked him in.

Gorham made it 2-0 after two were out in the fourth. Rob Tole reached on an infield error and came around to score on three wild pitches.

Greely (10-4) got a runner to third with two outs in the second inning for its only threat. Kevin Burke doubled and moved to third on Andrew Bisbing´s infield hit.

The next batter hit a grounder to first baseman Mark Schmidt, who threw to second, where shortstop Brian Schools took the throw for the force to end the inning.

"Both pitchers threw well," said Brian Schools, Phil´s twin brother.

"Copp had his off-speed stuff working and Phil had his curve.

"It´s good to bounce back. We got a little too cocky against Wells and they played extremely well.

"Beating a good team like Greely will help us get focused for our last two games and then the playoffs. We just have to keep it going."

Burke had two of three hits for Greely, which also has two regular-season games remaining.
